Job summary

MercyOne Central Iowa in Des Moines is seeking a Part-time Patient Care Tech to support clinical staff with direct patient care and tests during 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM–7:30 AM), with rotating weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities include assisting with personal hygiene, vital signs, glucose testing, patient safety, documentation in health records, and preparing rooms and equipment for procedures. Minimums include age 16, BLS within 6 weeks, and mandatory abuse training within 3 months.

Qualifications

• Must be 16 years of age.
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certified within six (6) weeks of hire.

Responsibilities

• Delivers assigned patient care and treatment as delegated by an RN or LPN.
• Performs or assists with activities including personal hygiene, bathing, ambulation, transporting, ROM exercises, dressing/undressing, feeding, changing bandages, elimination needs, and emptying drainage devices.
• Responds to patient calls and anticipates patient needs.
• Assures patient safety and comfort through safe handling techniques, regular rounding, environmental maintenance, and equipment maintenance.
• Calculates intake and output (excluding IVs).
• Measures vital signs.
• Performs bedside blood glucose testing.
• Keeps patient health records updated per policy.
• Initiates or assists with emergency measures (CPR, protecting patient from injury).
• Performs post-mortem care.
• Sets up equipment and supplies for procedures.
• Prepares patients and rooms for procedures, admissions, and transfers.
• Discharges patients from system.
• Observes and reports changes in condition to the nurse.
• Collects and labels specimens.
• Sets up, operates, and maintains equipment.
