Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician (PCT) to assist with basic nursing care under the supervision of an RN. The role supports activities of daily living, hygiene, nutrition, and documentation in a part-time night shift position.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
• Current Certified Nurse Aide (CENA) certification, or
• Enrollment in a health science program with nursing fundamentals course and/or one clinical rotation preferred.
• Equivalent enrollment considered including Nursing School, Pre-PA School, Medical School, or closely related health science program.
• Equivalent experience (Medical Assistant, Paramedic, Medical First Responder, EMT, Nurse Tech, Resident Aid/Assistant, or LPN) may be considered.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider required.
• Experience in acute care or extended care facility preferred.
• Able to complete unit-specific core competencies as defined in orientation checklist.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and provide comfort, including beds and transfers.
• Assist patients with hygiene activities.
• Provide urinary catheter care (excluding insertion/removal) and dressing changes; ostomy care where applicable.
• Assist with postmortem care.
• Support nutritional needs: pass trays, assist feeding, record intake.
• Monitor and document input/output and aid elimination needs.
• Collect specimens (sputum, urine, stool) and perform basic urine testing; use glucometer for blood glucose.
• Measure and record vital signs and weight using various scales.
• Operate equipment safely, assist with incentive spirometry and oxygen/suction setups.
• Maintain infection control with aseptic technique and standard precautions.
• Document care as directed by the RN and communicate observations.
• Assist with other duties to support department efficiency and participate in ongoing education.
