Job summary

University of Chicago Medicine in Hyde Park seeks a Nursing Support Assistant (CNA) to assist with patient care under RN supervision. The role emphasizes basic patient care, observation, documentation, and maintaining a clean, safe environment.

Duties include vital signs, ADL assistance, hygiene, nourishment, specimen collection, discharge prep, and CPR initiation. Candidates must meet Illinois HCWR, CPR/BLS, and HS diploma; 0.1 FTE registry with day shifts. On-site position.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be listed on the IDPH HCWR as an Illinois CNA or a nursing student who has passed the written competency exam and is listed on the HCWR.
• CPR/BLS Certification.
• Ability to read and write, perform simple mathematical calculations, follow oral and written instructions, perform variety of tasks without direct supervision and perform duties requiring continuous physical effort.
• Ability to effectively communicate verbally and/or in written form.
• Occasional lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs.
• Moderate to extreme physical effort such as walking, standing, performing CPR, and lifting materials, equipment, objects and/or patients may be required.
• Vision, hearing, and sense of touch must be adequate to enable one to quickly and accurately perform tasks such as reading small print, defining details, sending and receiving clear and accurate oral communication.
• Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention will be needed to interpret visual, auditory, and sensory inputs

Responsibilities

• Provides basic patient care activities including vital signs, enemas and basic tests such as glucoscan, hemacult and multistix
• Assists patients with activities of daily living, as appropriate/assigned, using proper aseptic, isolation, and infection control techniques in performance of duties
• Assists patients with personal hygiene, ambulation and nourishment/fluids
• Completes procedures as assigned, such as collecting patient specimens and weighing patients
• Assists with discharge and transfer preparation of patients
• Assists in the maintenance of the patient environment: makes patient beds, tidies patient room, and prepares patient room for admission and transfer
• Assists with the maintenance of supplies/equipment and the environment
• Communicates and accurately documents activities onto the proper records or logs
• Initiates CPR and calls a Dr. Cart
• Performs receptionist duties for assigned area as requested
