Job summary

GBMC HealthCare seeks a labor doula to provide continuous emotional and physical support during labor and into the early postpartum period.

The role includes assisting with birth choices, relaxation techniques, and pain relief, while ensuring clear communication among the laboring woman, partner, and medical team. Postpartum support and breastfeeding guidance are also offered as needed.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of childbirth theory and practice.
• Experience providing continuous labor support under supervision.
• Ability to communicate with expectant couples and healthcare providers in stressful situations.
• Non-judgmental guidance for pain management.
• Ability to manage many tasks simultaneously.
• Knowledge of cultural and religious birth traditions and respecting patient goals.

Responsibilities

• Assist the laboring woman, partner, and family with supporting patient choices, breathing, relaxation, and pain relief.
• Maintain continuous presence from admission through delivery.
• Facilitate communication between laboring family and healthcare providers.
• Obtain information to help patients make informed decisions.
• Provide emotional support, encouragement, and respite care during labor.
• Document birth experience and outcomes for the doula coordinator within 48 hours.
• Offer postpartum support and breastfeeding guidance if chosen.
