Job summary

City of Houston is seeking a candidate for a Storm Sewer Maintenance/Inspection role within the Transportation & Drainage Operations. The position supports emergency management activities and requires interaction with the public, businesses, and contractors to address inquiries and resolve issues.

The incumbent will perform inspections, maintain records, and prepare technical reports, with duties including travel to multiple sites and coordinating transportation as needed.

Qualifications

• Requires a high school diploma or a GED certificate and up to eighteen months of specialized education or training in a specific area or trade.
• One (1) year of experience related to customer service or an area of inspection to be performed is required.
• Depending on the area of specialty, the position may require the experience listed above to be journey level, received after completion of an apprenticeship program.

Description Of Duties/Essential Functions

Performs inspections, identifies problem areas, and recommends solutions. Meets with general public, civic groups, contractors, technical professionals and businesses to respond to inquiries and resolve problems. Performs record keeping activities to maintain filing systems, reports, and documentation. Researches and evaluates plans, specifications, codes and property information. Participates in and attends various meetings with civic associations, businesses, and other groups. Prepares and submits various technical reports. Arrange transportation to and from work sites.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position routinely requires lifting moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions.

This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum License Requirements

Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

PREFERENCES

• Preference will be given to individuals with working knowledge of asset management, work order system software/programs, GIS and have basic computer skills.
• Previous infrastructure is also desired with a focus on Operation and Maintenance.
• Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
