Job summary

The Daily Beast is seeking a Community Manager to grow and engage our audience across Substack, Reddit, YouTube, and our on-site commenting platform from our NYC office. You will work with editors and producers to keep conversations sharp, lively, and on-brand, ensuring readers keep coming back for more.

Primarily Sundays through Thursdays, four days a week in NYC. You’ll lead content plans, moderations, and cross-platform initiatives to enhance our community voice and editorial tone.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of experience in social media, community management, audience development, or digital journalism.
• Familiarity with Reddit and Substack, including what drives engagement and how conversations flow.
• Strong editorial instincts with the ability to write sharp, engaging prompts and comment responses.
• Analytical mindset with basic comfort reading data to inform content and community strategy.
• Highly organized and able to work across multiple teams in a fast-paced environment.
• Genuine interest in media, news, and digital communities.

Responsibilities

• Build and execute a robust Substack community content plan that complements our growing network of authors and publications, highlighting their voices and expanding their reach.
• Assist with the production and community management of the Daily Beast’s livestreams across Substack, YouTube, and other new platforms.
• Contribute to the Daily Beast’s Reddit strategy, including posting, commenting, and community building.
• Grow on-site community engagement via OpenWeb, including comment moderation, prompt creation, and community management as well as working with the product team to bolster our community offering.
• Track and report on engagement trends and user behavior across platforms.
• Collaborate with our podcast production team to suggest, cut, and publish social video clips to promote new episodes and livestream events.
• Contribute ideas to help shape the future of our community voice and editorial tone across platforms.

Overview

The Daily Beast is seeking a Community Manager to help grow and engage our audience across Substack, Reddit, YouTube, and our on-site commenting platform. This cross-functional role sits across editorial, social, audience, and product. You’ll work closely with our editors and producers to make sure our conversations are sharp, lively, and on-brand—and that our readers keep coming back for more.

If you live on Substack and believe internet discourse can be better with the right tone-setters, this position is for you.

The role will be primarily Sunday through Thursday and based in our NYC office four days a week.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with community engagement tools

Pay Range Salary

The pay range for this position is $55,500 to $65,000 annually.

The base salary range represents the anticipated low and high end of the salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to work location, experience, performance and other factors. The range listed is just one component of The Daily Beast’s total compensation package. The Daily Beast provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, 401K employer matching program, paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO).
