The Residential & Commercial Security Technician at Preventia is responsible for installing, servicing, troubleshooting, programming, and maintaining electronic security and low-voltage systems. In this role, you will work directly with residential and commercial customers as well as internal team members to ensure all systems function properly, are installed to high standards, and exceed customer expectations. The ideal candidate is technically capable, dependable, customer-focused, and confident working independently while recognizing when to collaborate with the team. We are looking for technicians who take full ownership of their work from start to finish—leaving every job thoroughly tested, documented, and closed out.

Key Responsibilities
- Installation & Service: Install, service, program, troubleshoot, and repair electronic security and low-voltage systems in both residential and commercial environments.
- System Types: Work extensively with:
- Residential and commercial burglar alarm systems
- Fire alarm and life-safety devices
- Access control systems
- Video surveillance / CCTV systems
- Intercom and door-entry systems
- Network and low-voltage cabling/equipment
- Monitoring and communication equipment
- Technical Execution: Read and interpret system plans, wiring diagrams, floor plans, job scopes, and manufacturer specifications.
- Cabling & Hardware: Pull, terminate, label, and test low-voltage cabling, devices, control panels, card readers, cameras, and sensors.
- Network & Programming: Configure, program, and troubleshoot network-connected security devices and IP/PoE systems.
- Customer Service & Education: Communicate professionally with customers, contractors, and project managers. Educate customers on system operation, explain repairs, and answer technical questions.
- Opportunity Identification: Identify potential system issues, required upgrades, or additional service opportunities and report them to the Operations or Sales teams.
- Documentation & Records: Maintain clean, accurate job notes, photos, programming documentation, work orders, and closeout paperwork.
- Asset & Site Management: Maintain company vehicles, tools, equipment, and inventory in a clean, organized, and safe manner.
- Mentorship: Provide support and guidance to less experienced technicians as needed.
Qualifications
Required
- Experience: 2+ years of hands-on experience in the electronic security or low-voltage industry.
- System Knowledge: Demonstrated experience with one or more core focus areas (Access Control, CCTV/Video Surveillance, Residential/Commercial Burglar Alarms, or Fire Alarms).
- Technical Skills: Strong troubleshooting capabilities, proficiency with low-voltage wiring, and the ability to read wiring diagrams and floor plans.
- Customer Focus: Strong verbal and written communication skills with a customer-first mindset.
- Autonomy: Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and work independently in the field.
- Driver Requirements: Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy equipment, work from ladders/scaffolding, and operate comfortably in various indoor and outdoor environments.
Preferred
- Platforms: Experience with Alarm.com, Brivo, Eagle Eye Networks, DSC, Honeywell, DMP, or similar platforms.
- Networking: Solid understanding of IP networking, network configurations, and PoE devices.
- Certifications: NICET certification, state fire alarm licensing, or specific manufacturer certifications.
- Leadership: Experience leading job sites or mentoring junior technicians.
- Integration: Familiarity with multi-platform integration and unified security solutions.
