Job summary

UMass Chan Medical School seeks a Maintenance Co-Generation Engineer I to operate boilers and turbine generators and manage related auxiliaries in the Co-Generation Facility.

You will perform preventive maintenance, logging observations, and coordinating with other maintenance trades as needed. The role requires license compliance, 1–2 years of plant experience, and ability to work rotating shifts to support 24/7 operations.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a Massachusetts Third Class or higher Stationary Engineer license.
  • 1-2 years experience in modern power plant.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Welding and machine shop experience.
  • Safety practices around high pressure, high voltage systems.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair power plant equipment including boilers, turbines, air compressors, refrigeration equipment, pumps and motors.
  • Perform mechanical, electrical and distribution system repairs.
  • Ensure production of steam, power, electrical power and refrigeration.
  • Operate high‑pressure boilers, superheaters, economizers and auxiliaries.
  • Operate steam turbine generators, condensers and related equipment; log observations; perform basic electrical tasks.
  • Monitor power demand, voltage, frequency, and power factor; adjust as needed.
  • Manage four power systems: UPS, utility 13,800 V, standby diesel Emergency Power system.
  • Operate cooling towers, condensers, and related auxiliaries; log observations.
  • Provide preventive maintenance and instrumentation care.
  • Take readings on all power plant equipment.
