Job summary

The Power Plant Manager at the University of Massachusetts Amherst leads the Central Heating Plant operations and maintenance, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient generation of electric and steam for the campus. You will oversee daily plant activities, coordinate with vendors, and assure all permits and regulations are met.

This role requires a First Class Stationary Engineer’s license, supervisory experience, and a strong background in gas turbines, HRSGs, boilers and water treatment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with four years’ utility power generation or energy facility experience, or an Associate’s with six years.
  • First Class Stationary Engineer’s license issued by MA DPS per MGL Ch.146.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Thorough understanding of generating plant operations and maintenance.
  • Experience coordinating electric generation and fuel supply with vendors and LDCs.
  • Experience budgeting and reporting practices.
  • Strong oral and written communication and computational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Directs plant operations and maintenance to meet campus electric and steam needs and ensure plant efficiency and safety.
  • Develops and implements 24-hour coverage work schedules with licensed personnel.
  • Recruits, hires and trains Central Heating Plant personnel as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains operating and maintenance procedures.
  • Reviews and improves operational processes and training adherence.
  • Maintains operation and maintenance reports on equipment efficiency and energy consumption.
  • Schedules repair and maintenance of gas turbine, boilers, generators and support equipment.
  • Manages fuel oil, chemicals, inventory and procurement at the plant.
  • Coordinates gas usage nomination with Berkshire Gas Company and campus suppliers.
  • Coordinates electrical production, campus grid consumption and ISO New England program requirements.
