Job summary

UMass Boston is seeking a Utility Plant Operator to oversee the operation and maintenance of boilers, chillers, and associated systems in the Facilities Department. The role includes monitoring electronic controls, performing routine maintenance, and responding to emergencies to ensure safe, reliable plant operation.

Ideal candidates will have at least five years of experience in boiler or chiller plant operations, plus a Massachusetts Fireman or Engineer license.

Qualifications

• Minimum five years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience operating/maintaining boiler or chiller plants.
• Massachusetts Fireman License (1st or 2nd Class) or Engineer License (1st, 2nd or 3rd Class) issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety is required.
• Knowledge of safety practices and operation of power plants; ability to read gauges and meters.

Responsibilities

• Operate boilers and auxiliary equipment according to SOPs and safety regulations.
• Maintain and repair HVAC systems, pumps, fans, and related equipment.
• Respond to emergencies or equipment breakdowns promptly and effectively.
• Keep operating logs, read meters, and report fuel levels to appropriate personnel.
