Job summary

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a Cloud Hardware Development Engineer (CHDE) with a mechanical engineering focus to deliver high‑quality mechanical design and thermal management for optical modules and systems powering the global AWS network.

You will collaborate with design teams, manufacturing partners, and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure robust, manufacturable, and thermally optimized solutions, while driving manufacturing improvements to reduce cost and improve yields.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • 8+ years of mechanical design experience for hardware systems.
  • 8+ years of thermal simulation and test validation experience.
  • 4+ years developing and automating validation testbeds for thermal and mechanical characterization.
  • 4+ years of data analysis and presenting data-driven deep dives on thermal and mechanical design.
  • 2+ years working on manufacturing processes and qualifications.
  • 1+ year of automation scripting using Python or similar language.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with vendors to evaluate mechanical and thermal design approaches, materials and assembly processes for optical modules.
  • Develop and execute mechanical and thermal designs for optical modules and systems, including structural analysis, tolerance stack-up, and enclosure design.
  • Perform thermal simulation and validation to meet performance requirements across operating conditions.
  • Develop and automate test plans for validation of optical modules.
  • Define and develop mechanical and thermal test plans with vendors for prototyping and production.
  • Drive design for manufacturing initiatives to improve yields and reduce cost.
  • Identify quality issues and optimize manufacturing yields and RMA processes.
