Job Summary


Evaluates and treats research animals coming into UCSF. Independently performs routine Veterinarian duties and can direct animal health technicians in providing animal care. When needed receives supervision or guidance for cases. Has interest in veterinary and husbandry needs of all research species, including aquatics. Ensures assigned activities adhere to Protocols and applicable USDA, NIH and AAALAC regulations and rules. Participates in the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) processes and oversight functions. Performs on-call, after hours veterinary coverage.

This is a 1 year contract role from the date of hire.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $98,300 - $210,300 (Annual Rate).



Department Description


The Laboratory Animal Resource Center is a recharge department providing veterinary care and housing services for all animals used in biomedical research and teaching. LARC provides veterinary medical care and husbandry services, assures compliance with laws and regulations concerning the use of animals in research, and veterinary medical advice to UCSF researchers.



Required Qualifications


  • Doctoral degree (D.V.M. / V.M.D.) from veterinary school that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Associate, or equivalent degree.
  • 1 or more years of related work experience.
  • Required: Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California
  • Those without California veterinary license must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in any state in the USA and must obtain California veterinary license within 12 months of appointment
  • Must obtain and maintain USDA accredited veterinarian status within 6 months of hire
  • Until license is obtained, Veterinarian could not sign off on procedures etc. without the supervision of a licensed California Veterinarian
  • Veterinary basic surgical skills & abilities, including post-operative care, recovery and treatment management
  • Veterinary diagnostic abilities and knowledge
  • Knowledge of laboratory animal medicine and surgery of common research animal species, aquatics and nonhuman primates (NHP).
  • Well-developed written & oral communication abilities
  • Computer skills at basic level
  • California veterinarian license must be maintained at all times; failure to do so will result in immediate termination from position.
  • Must participate in the UCSF occupational health program, medical health screenings, zoonotic screenings, and similar. Must understand and accept that the position has the risk for exposure to zoonotic agents as well as other hazardous agents or chemicals.
  • This position is designated as critical in accordance with University of California policy and requires successful completion of a background check process. The position holder is subject to fingerprinting as well.
  • This position requires the use of personal protective clothing to prevent injuries and exposure to potentially hazardous agents
  • A CA driver's license is required when driving UC vehicle.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Basic knowledge of federal rules and regulations, Animal Welfare Act (AWA), Public Health Service (PHS) and Association for Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) international guidelines
  • Veterinary basic anesthesia knowledge & abilities
  • Eligible to sit for ACLAM Board Examination
  • Aquatics experience and interest
  • Research Lab experience
  • Residency training in Lab Animal Veterinary Training Program
  • IACUC experience
  • One or more years' Private Practice Veterinarian
  • Supervision of various staff in lab animal departments
  • IACUC, Biosafety, similar committee membership
  • Independent Research
  • Advanced degree beyond DVM


License/Certification
