Job Summary

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Psychiatry Neuroimaging Laboratory is looking to hire a qualified candidate for the position of Research Assistant. The laboratory is part of the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. The main mission of this laboratory is to understand brain abnormalities and their role in psychiatric disorders by using state-of-the-art neuroimaging techniques. Qualifications

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Please note, the functions below are representative of major duties that are typically associated with this position. Specific responsibilities may vary based on departmental needs. Not all duties outlined will necessarily be assigned.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Work closely with others in a collaborative research environment including Research Assistants, physicians, computer scientists, psychologists, neuroscientists, and Principal Investigators on research involving brain abnormalities in schizophrenia, clinical high risk for psychosis, traumatic brain injury, and other populations.
  • Assist in managing and coordinating research studies by entering data, assisting with data analysis, and participating in clinical laboratory work such as MRI scans.
  • Learn to use image processing tools for pre-processing and analyzing structural, functional, and diffusion MRI data.
  • Learn to use statistical programs like Python and R for data management and basic statistical testing.
  • Learn troubleshooting and modification of image processing pipelines.
  • Collect, describe, and analyze library research materials.
  • Help prepare and proofread scientific manuscripts and grant applications.
  • Adhere to MGB and department policies, demonstrating professionalism and contributing to the lab and hospital goals.
  • Perform other related research duties as required.
  • QA/QC incoming data for a multisite international study and clinical trial.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required; strong organizational skills and ability to work well in a team environment.

Experience:

  • Encouraged majors: Psychology, neuroscience, computer science, engineering, pre-med; all applicants welcome.
  • Prior research or clinical experience recommended.
  • Computer programming experience (Linux/UNIX, Python/Bash scripting, scientific software like Python, R, MATLAB) preferred but not required.
