Job summary

Keck Hospital of USC in Los Angeles is seeking a Laboratory Assistant/Non-Phlebotomist to provide clerical and technical support to Clinical Laboratory Scientists.

The role involves receiving and screening specimens, processing and packaging samples, handling result inquiries, and communicating with patients and staff. It also supports testing activities and adheres to hospital policies while contributing to quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1 year experience in laboratory testing assistance, preferably in an acute care facility.
• Pref Specialized/technical training Graduate from an accredited school of Medical Assistant program.
• Pref Certified Phlebotomy Technician - CPT (CA DPH)
• Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) required within 30 days of hire and renewed before expiration (LA City only).

Responsibilities

• Receives and screens specimens with regard to acceptability as defined by guidelines.
• Processes, distributes or packages all specimens received (except Blood Bank and Anatomic Pathology).
• Handles inquiries for lab results, specimen status and general information about the department.
• Interacts professionally with patients, coworkers and guests of the institution.
• Assists in performing and documenting laboratory testing, equipment maintenance and function checks.
• Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Participates in Department’s Quality Improvement program.
