Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking Medical Support Assistants (MSAs) at the GS-05 level under an Open Continuous Announcement. Referrals are made on an as-needed basis and the announcement may extend to support VA facilities nationwide.

MSAs provide frontline patient support, greet and assist patients, answer calls, schedule visits, and enter data into electronic health records. Telework is not guaranteed and multiple schedules/locations may apply.

Qualifications

  • U.S. citizenship; able to read/write English per VA standard.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to schedule appointments and assist with patient inquiries.
  • Ability to operate computerized systems while protecting patient information (PII).

Responsibilities

  • Schedule, cancel, and reschedule patient appointments.
  • Answer phones, greet patients, and relay messages.
  • Enter, verify, and interpret provider orders in the EMR per scheduling guidelines.
  • Coordinate administrative functions for transfers to VA facilities or private hospitals.
  • Monitor inpatient and outpatient appointments and update demographics/insurance.
