Job Title: Civil Litigation Paralegal
Location: Remote, California
Position Type: Full-Time

Job Summary:
We are a dynamic and growing elder abuse and medical malpractice defense firm that is seeking an experienced Civil Litigation Paralegal to join our team!The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of California civil litigation experience, from case inception through post-judgment.We are seeking a self-starter who can manage (and prioritize) multiple cases/projects simultaneously. We value collaboration and communication; thus, we are seeking a team member with strong written and oral communication skills who can work independently as well as with a team.This role requires critical thinking, exceptional organizational skills, and a high level of attention to detail.This role will work under the general supervision of an attorney but must be able to perform routine duties with precision and minimal oversight.
In general, this position requires the willingness and ability to perform a variety of paraprofessional legal duties, such as: to assist in preparation of cases for trial, prepare legal documents, track and review discovery, perform legal research and writing, and provide clerical support (such as answering phones, copying/scanning) as needed.The ideal candidate will be mentally engaged with a willingness to evolve and grow with the firm.
This position is largely remote and there is no billable hour requirement.Candidates must be able to consistently fulfill their duties in a remote setting, with few distractions, during standard industry work hours.We prefer candidates who are in California, as in-person trial support may occasionally be required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Case Management: Assist attorneys in all phases of litigation, including case intake, discovery procurement and evaluation, trial preparation, and post-trial activities. Prepare templates, case briefs, case intake evaluations, maintain/organize case files, and maintain case and contact lists.Help enhance office and case effectiveness.Knowledge of case progression and standard statutory deadlines.
- Legal Research: Conduct investigative and legal research.Comfort using Westlaw, LexisNexis, and other legal research tools to assist attorneys in issue and case preparation.
- Document Preparation: Draft, edit, finalize, file and serve legal documents such as pleadings, motions, subpoenas, and discovery demands/responses in compliance with court rules and procedures.Comfort with judicial council forms and local court forms.
- Discovery: Locate and develop relevant case information. Manage the discovery process, including the collection, review, and production of documents, identification and subpoenaing of third-party evidence, as well as preparing and responding to interrogatories, requests for admissions, and assisting with preparation for depositions. Track, evaluate, summarize and organize all types of discovery, including depositions, discovery responses, and document productions.
- Interaction: Maintain professional and timely communication with legal professionals, including team members, court personnel, vendors, witnesses, opposing counsel, and clients, to provide updates on case progress, gather necessary information, and respond to inquiries.
- Trial Preparation: Organize and prepare trial binders, exhibits, witness lists, jury instructions, and other materials needed for trial; comfort with technology necessary to assist with trial presentation development; assist attorneys during trial as needed.
- Calendar Management: Maintain and monitor case calendars, including deadlines, due dates, court dates, and appointments.Identify and track local rules and departmental rules for case-specific deadlines.
- Court Filings: Handle and track court filings (primarily e-filing) in courts throughout California.Ensure all necessary documents are filed in a timely manner.
- Administrative Support: Provide general administrative support, including scheduling meetings, maintaining files, calendaring, scanning/copying/typing, and coordinating with other legal professionals.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience as a paralegal in civil litigation. Experience in elder abuse, medical malpractice and/or civil litigation defense is a bonus.
- Education: Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program or equivalent experience; a bachelor's degree is preferred.
- Knowledge: In-depth understanding of California civil procedure, court rules (including local and court-specific departmental rules), and filing requirements (including e-filing) requirements.Familiarity with all aspects of discovery, including third party subpoenas for records, and trial procedures is a plus.
- Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; organized and precise with strong attention to detail; computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e.,Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), legal research databases, and case management software.
- Abilities: Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines; strong problem-solving skills and the ability to anticipate case needs.Willingness to provide trial and other case-specific support as needed.
- Certifications: Certification as a Certified Paralegal (CP) or California Advanced Specialist (CAS) is preferred but not required.
Compensation:
- Salary range:$75,000 - $85,000 (commensurate with experience).
