Job summary

SUMMARY:

The Track Engineer will provide timely, accurate engineering support for Maintenance of Way (MOW), Capital Construction, and C&D projects involving tracks, switches, third rail systems, ADA station upgrades, and platform rehabilitation. The role includes performing engineering design, field surveys, construction support, shop drawing reviews, material evaluations, and maintaining standard track drawings and specifications. The position also assists in investigations of derailments and other track‑related incidents to ensure system safety and reliability.

Under direction, the engineer will plan, coordinate, and direct the design and construction of complex railway engineering projects. Responsibilities include preparing and reviewing engineering drawings, writing technical specifications, providing field inspections, delivering construction recommendations, verifying safety measures, and performing CADD drafting. The role may involve supervising subordinate staff. An engineering degree is required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A valid New York State Professional Engineer's License and four years of full-time

experience in civil engineering. A master's degree in civil engineering from an accredited

college will be accepted as equivalent to one year of the full-time experience in civil

Special Note:

In addition to above qualification requirements, to be eligible for placement in

Assignment Levels II and III, individuals must have at least one year within the last

three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project

requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct

the project.

License Requirements:

A Motor Vehicle Driver’s License valid in the State of New York may be

required for certain assignments. If required, this license must be maintained for

duration of appointment.

DESIRED SKILLS:
  • Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., MicroStation) and MS Office.
  • Ability to use surveying equipment (preferred).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of concrete and steel structural inspection.
  • Familiarity with construction design and multi‑agency requirements.
  • Ability to read and write technical drawings and correspondence.
