The City of Lauderhill is seeking a Building Official to oversee the building inspection program ensuring compliance with Florida Building Code. This supervisory role involves managing technical personnel, enforcing safety regulations, and advising on building methods. Ideal candidates will have substantial experience in code compliance and relevant certifications.
The purpose of this position is to perform supervisory work of technical personnel involved in building inspection, plans examination, code interpretation and compliance with the Florida Building Code, under the general supervision of the Chief Building Official. Employees in this classification are responsible for enforcing Federal, State, and Local Codes, ordinances and regulations related to the structural discipline; as well as, performing supervisory and skilled inspection work. The position is responsible for overseeing the review of structural plans, specifications and permits to ensure the safety, conformance and compliance with applicable laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations. Directs the building inspection program, including plans examinations, code interpretation, and field inspection of all construction, repair, alteration, removal, demolition of buildings and structures to assure compliance with local, state, and federal codes and regulations; represents the City before the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals, in the absence of Chief Building Official.
Coordinates, plans, organizes and supervises the work of field inspectors and plans examiners involved in the inspection of buildings during the construction process to insure conformance with plans.
Determines the status of complaints and assigns responsibility for investigations; follows up on violations and complaints; issues citations to violators and coordinates prosecution of violators when necessary to ensure compliance with ordinances.
Assists the Chief Building Official as required with activities of the Unsafe Structure Board; recommends condemnation and demolition of buildings and unsafe structures to appropriate jurisdictional bodies; authorizes condemnation of faulty and hazardous installations.
Reviews and approves features of plans for structural fire protection and safety; supervises issuance of permits; responds to inquiries concerning building code requirements; issues stop working orders; reviews and approves certificates of occupancy.
Advises on matters related to plan examinations; establishes policies, practices and procedures and ensures implementation.
Confers and corresponds with attorneys, public officials, architects, contractors, and property owners on matters related to inspection, code enforcement, and building methods and practices; provides on-going technical advice.
Communicates and works with other chiefs and plans examiners about issues that overlap concerning permit and code requirements.
Attends seminars and training courses to stay informed on new developments in the related field and to obtain current information of code changes.
Interprets and enforces applicable building codes.
Performs supervisory functions such as assigning work, setting standards, reviewing work, counseling, and provides input on employee performance.
Assists Chief Building Official in day-to-day operations of department; represents department at committee meetings, boards, and other technical/professional meetings; assumes function of the Building Official in their absence.
Provides technical expertise to other City activities, general public and building professionals.
Researches permit information; provides specifications for contracts.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with City employees, elected officials, the press, the general public, industry professionals, and other government agencies.
Provides expert witness testimony as requested by State Attorney’s Office.
Inspects buildings for compliance with Occupational License requirements.
Reviews and makes recommendations for revisions to applicable codes.
Prepares periodic reports documenting activities and events in area of responsibility.
Performs office functions such as answering phones, copying, filing, and faxing.
Performs related duties as directed.Minimum Qualifications
