Position Overview

The Charge Nurse is responsible for the daily management of the nursing unit, focusing on patient safety, throughput, and caregiver accountability. This role supervises and directs unit activities, collaborates with physicians and other stakeholders, and ensures the delivery of safe, quality patient care. The Charge Nurse may float to other units occasionally but primarily remains in their assigned unit. This position requires population-specific competencies and adherence to National Patient Safety Goals.

Qualifications
  • Current RN licensure in Oklahoma
  • Associates of Science in Nursing required; BSN preferred within two years
  • Current BLS certification
  • Effective communication skills in English
  • Department-specific competencies during orientation

Additional certifications for specific departments:

  • Emergency Department: PALS and ACLS certifications
  • Adult Critical Care: Competency in advanced skills and ACLS certification
Responsibilities
  • Support caregivers with standards of care and escalate issues as needed
  • Ensure safe caregiver assignments and manage unit workflow
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives
  • Delegate and coordinate patient care activities
  • Serve as primary contact for medical staff questions
  • Manage patient flow, admissions, and discharges
  • Project staffing needs and escalate issues
  • Ensure caregivers take scheduled breaks and lunches
  • Conduct safety huddles and bedside shift reports
  • Perform patient rounds, ensuring safety measures are in place
  • Address team dynamics and crucial conversations as needed
Additional Details

The Charge Nurse reports to the supervisor, manager, or director. Physical demands and safety precautions are detailed in the Physical Demands Project SharePoint site. Potential exposure to infectious diseases and other hazards requires adherence to standard precautions.
