Job summary

The Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) seeks a strategic Chief Financial Officer to lead financial health, governance, and sustainability. You will partner with senior leaders, oversee two finance staff, and collaborate with External Affairs on fundraising, grants, and long-term planning.

In this hands-on role, you will manage endowment oversight, capital projects, and collections-related activities, balancing strategic thinking with operational execution for a mission-driven museum

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; CPA or MBA preferred.
• 6–8 years of progressively responsible financial management experience.
• Experience managing and developing staff.
• Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting: restricted funds, endowment, grants.
• Experience with investments, capital projects, and capital campaigns desirable.
• Experience with senior leadership, boards, auditors, and external partners.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to translate complex financial information for diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement financial strategies to support mission and long-term sustainability.
• Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning.
• Provide timely financial reporting, analysis, and recommendations to leadership and Board.
• Oversee accounting operations, internal controls, audits, taxes, and compliance.
• Supervise two finance staff members and develop the team.
• Manage relationships with auditors, investment managers, banking partners, and advisors.
• Ensure governance and stewardship of financial policies across the organization.
• Provide financial oversight for endowment, restricted funds, and capital projects.
• Support fundraising and grant budgets, reporting, and compliance.
• Advise on donor commitments, restricted gifts, and multi-year grants.
• Guide capital projects budgeting, funding, and cost monitoring.
• Provide financial guidance on collections-related transactions and insurance.
