Job summary

YMCA of Greater Houston seeks a dedicated Swim Instructor to lead lessons, promote safety, and support youth development within our aquatics program. You will engage with families, monitor progress, and ensure equipment readiness for daily classes at our facility.

The role emphasizes maintaining certifications, delivering quality instruction, and collaborating with aquatics leadership to provide a positive learning environment for all participants.

Qualifications

• Minimum age of 16 years and must be at least 5 years older than the oldest youth participant.
• Demonstrate Swim Instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures.
• Current /or must obtain prior to first scheduled instructional shift: YMCA Swim Instructor Certification. ASHI certification for: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen and YOTS Child Abuse Prevention Training, Information Security and Awareness, Workplace Harassment and Bullying, Universal Precautions, and New Staff Orientation Assessment.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Responsibilities

• Lead swim lessons for 1–2 participants per class.
• Maintain certifications and safety compliance according to YMCA standards.
• Record attendance and progress accurately.
• Prepare and check equipment before classes.
• Provide feedback to students and engage parents for at-home learning.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings and follow reporting requirements.
• Follow abuse reporting and safety policies and procedures.
• Assist with stroke development clinics or other aquatics programs as needed.
