Primary Function

Responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing, distribution, storage, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation in the Sterile Processing area. Interaction with surgeons, nurses, and the OR team is vital to ensure proper products are available at the time of surgery.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Decontaminate, clean, inspect, process, and assemble surgical instrumentation for the Operating Room, Sterile Processing area, and durable patient care equipment.
  2. Operate and maintain sterilizers, washers, and endoscope reprocessors; perform high-level disinfection and record testing results.
  3. Disinfect video scopes and auxiliary equipment using manual techniques and automated systems; conduct visual and operational inspections.
  4. Understand cleaning protocols and appropriate use of cleaning agents/detergents.
  5. Inspect instruments for cleanliness, function, and wear before assembly.
  6. Assemble instrument trays and equipment according to guidelines; wrap or pouch items properly.
  7. Perform challenge tests on sterilizers and interpret parameters to ensure proper function.
  8. Check the OR schedule daily to prioritize surgical cases and organize supplies accordingly.
  9. Collaborate with Supply Chain for systematic organization of supplies and manage last-minute additions.
  10. Follow all federal, state, and institutional regulations, including AAMI, OSHA, and infection control policies.
  11. Perform minor troubleshooting of equipment and escalate issues when necessary.
  12. Maintain and distribute sterile supplies and carts throughout the hospital.
  13. Adhere to Universal Precautions and participate in process improvement initiatives.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned and provide additional support as needed.
Job Qualifications
  • Preferred: 6 months of Surgical Services experience.
  • Required: HSPA CRCST certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Skills in inventory management, problem solving, communication, teamwork, and multitasking.
  • Proficient in computers and Microsoft Office.
