Position Summary

Under the direction of the Endoscopy Nurse Manager, the Lead Endoscopy Technician establishes and enforces standards of endoscopes and equipment for both the inpatient and CAMS endoscopy suites. In addition, the Lead Technician will collaborate with the OR, ENT CAMS suite, and Radiology Oncology to ensure all supplies and scopes are readily available to maintain the flow of all patients.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities Includes The Following

  • Understand the role of a Scope Care Specialist and the Olympus personnel available to support the GI team.
  • Access and understand Olympus resources that are designed to ensure proper scope handling and reduce repairs.
  • Partner with Olympus’ Endoscopy Support Specialist (ESS) to improve Service Contract performance.
  • Obtain knowledge about common scope damage and identify facility trends that are contributing to high dollar repairs.
  • Identify root causes of equipment damage and train staff on proper scope handling to reduce damage in the future.
  • Present data and recommendations to fellow staff in effort to improve scope handling.
  • Understand basic Olympus endoscope anatomy and functionality.
  • Schedule and conduct future repair reduction observations.
  • Collaborates with leadership team on action plans on reducing costs associated with repairs.
  • Reviews Olympus Service Reporting from ESS and meets with ESS as needed for review.
  • Identify staff training needs.
  • Assist perioperative division, as the Endoscopic Support Specialist (ESS) in scheduling education with the leadership team.
  • Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  • Demonstrates/articulates an understanding of the responsibilities of the position.
  • Verbalizes and applies knowledge of current department and hospital Policies and Procedures.
  • Attends staff meetings or equivalent as requested/required to update knowledge related to current department/hospital issues.
  • Attends in services as required/requested to update knowledge.
  • Completes annual department/hospital competency requirements and documents appropriately on Competency/Education Record.
  • Able to prioritize workload.
  • Prioritizes, organizes, and manages assignment within a normal work period.
  • Implements patient safety measures as needed(Risk fall program, etc.)
  • Responds appropriately in emergency patient situations.
  • Identifies malfunctioning equipment, tags, and returns to appropriate department.
  • Set up of procedure room and scopes pre/post procedure.
  • Precleaning of endoscopes in the procedure room.
  • High Level Disinfection (HLD) of scopes and endoscope instruments in the scope processing room.
  • Assist with weekly storeroom and direct purchase order.
  • Restocking procedure room and scope processing room.
  • Checks procedure and recovery rooms between cases and resupplies as necessary.
  • Actively participates in the Quality Improvement Program.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements

3 years of relevant experience as Endoscopy Technician in Hospital Setting

Satisfactory completion of the Olympus Support Specialist Certificate program required.

Certification in Flexible Endoscope Reprocessing (CFER Certification) required.

High School Diploma/Equivalency

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment

  • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
  • Must be physically able to transport heavy objects more than 50 lbs, and lift patients of all weights with a minimum of one (1) assist or assistive device; perform difficult manipulative arm – hand steadiness and hand – eye coordination skills; walk and stand for a minimum of 3 hours. Must be physically able to meet all regulatory requirements 100% of the time.
  • Must have the ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruption and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time frequently. Individual must be able to understand theories behind several related concepts and remember multiple tasks given during the course of a day constantly.
  • Must be able to detect objects closely and far away and hears normal sounds with some background noises: communicates effectively (verbally, written) in English 100% of the time.
