Job description

Summary

The position is located in the Dental Department of the Surgery Care Line at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. The Senior Clinical Expanded Functional Dental Assistant functions in a clinical setting, utilizing their certification to enhance the dentist's capabilities through tooth restoration procedures prepared by the dentist. This role enables the dentist to treat more patients.

Qualifications Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, according to VA Policy.
  • Experience and Education: (1) Six months experience demonstrating ability or familiarity with the work, or (2) Completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by CODA, or a combination of experience and education.
  • Certification: Must meet radiologic procedure credentialing standards per 42 CFR Part 75, including successful completion of the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination by DANB, or equivalent courses/examinations. Certification in basic life support is highly desirable. DANB certification is preferred but not required for certain levels.
  • Loss of Credential: Failure to obtain or maintain required credentials may result in removal from employment.

Additional Provisions: Employees may qualify under the Grandfathering Provision if currently employed and meeting certain criteria. All employees must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations: GS-8 Senior Clinical Expanded Function Dental Assistant
  • At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade or equivalent demonstrating core competencies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities in expanded functions such as placement and finishing of restorative materials, recording impressions, and managing dental imaging.
  • Representative duties include performing various restorative procedures, managing imaging quality control, developing equipment requests, and possibly managing specialty functions like orthodontics.

Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods, lift/light carry under 15 pounds, reach, use fingers, walk, stand, bend, coordinate, and have good vision and hearing.

Duties
  • The Senior Clinical EFDA reports to the Chief of Dental Service and assists dentists with specific chairside procedures, providing direct patient care with a high level of independence and technical skill.
  • Major functions include restoring teeth, supporting endodontic treatments, taking impressions, constructing models, fabricating crowns, operating radiographic equipment, and assisting in surgical procedures.
  • Additional responsibilities include ensuring imaging quality, developing equipment requests, and performing other tasks as assigned.
  • Work Schedule: 8 or 10-hour tours, with flexible options; not telework or virtual.
