Location: Offsite Reprocessing Center - 2521 Brittons Hill Rd. Richmond VA

Job Summary:

The Certified Sterile Processing Technician, under general supervision, will inspect, clean, assemble, test, and process patient care equipment, supplies, and instruments according to established policies, procedures, and manufacturer instructions. They will adhere to sterility standards per AAMI, JCAHO, CDC, and state regulations. Responsibilities may vary depending on the assigned area.

Essential Functions:
  • Perform decontamination, including manual cleaning and processing of surgical instruments and patient care equipment following manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Use appropriate knowledge of detergents and disinfectants to remove blood, bone, and other tissues, adhering to standard precautions.
  • Manage inventory: stock, deliver supplies, order, label, and maintain proper levels, rotating stock and inspecting for outdates.
  • Document quality control activities related to sterilization and infection control, using IT systems for instrument tracking, surgery schedules, and supply management.
  • Operate sterilizers and sterilization techniques, monitor sterilization processes, and ensure quality assurance with indicators and integrators.
  • Record all activities and report variances affecting patient safety or product sterility.
  • Handle infection control issues, biological hazardous materials, and PPE usage.
  • Understand and test washers, disinfectors, sterilizers, and other equipment.
  • Identify surgical instrumentation by specialty, perform functionality testing, assembly, and disassembly as per instructions.
  • Participate in educational and competency activities, orient new staff, and contribute to ongoing personnel development.
  • Be accessible for on-call duties as scheduled.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Certification: CRCST, HSPA, or CBSPD required
  • Recent surgical experience preferred
Skills & Abilities:
  • Follow instructions, work independently, handle pressure, and possess anatomy knowledge.
  • Effective communication, computer skills, critical thinking, HIPAA compliance, infection control knowledge, and a sense of urgency.
  • Surgical conscience, professionalism, self-direction, teamwork, and ability to take direction.
Training:
  • EPIC system knowledge preferred
