Job summary

Marshall Medical Centers, an affiliate of the Huntsville Hospital Health System, seeks a phlebotomist to perform venipunctures and specimen collection in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Under supervision, you will label specimens, print test reports, assist with clerical tasks, maintain stocked and sanitary collection areas, and support clinicians with courteous patient interactions. Experience in a hospital lab is preferred; on-the-job training will be provided.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
• 1–2 months on-the-job training under supervision.
• Competency in laboratory procedures as appropriate.
• Good general condition.
• Verbal ability to communicate with patients and clientele.
• Numerical ability to calculate by formula.
• Form perception and visual acuity for lab tests.
• Dependable.

Responsibilities

• Collect blood specimens from in-patients and out-patients.
• Print Outstanding Orders reports and respond to specimens listed on report.
• Follow collection manual for patient identification and labeling tubes.
• Prepare urine containers for collection and instruct patients on method.
• Order tests, receive specimens in computer and place barcode labels.
• Adhere to infection control procedures and isolation precautions.
• Assist in clerical duties and stocking supplies.
• Keep work areas clean and sanitary.
• Respond to telephone inquiries timely.
• Orient new phlebotomists to procedures and environment.
