Job summary

The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inc. is seeking a Central Heating Plant Operator on an on-call, part-time basis. Based on the CHP operations, you will manage steam generation, watchstanding, and alarm monitoring to ensure campus facilities run smoothly.

You will perform routine daily operations, monitor systems, maintain logs, and assist with maintenance tasks during the 32-week academic year. Training in HVAC and building automation is preferred; licensing is advantageous.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Some college experience helpful.
  • Training in HVAC field is required.
  • Training in building automation systems is preferred.
  • License as Stationary Engineer preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine daily operations on all steam generating, auxiliary, and ice rink equipment as outlined in the CHP Preventive Maintenance Program.
  • Monitor and operate steam generation equipment and auxiliaries.
  • Monitor, analyze, and control manual and automated systems.
  • Stand boiler plant watch and perform firefighter duties as required.
  • Monitor and record pressures, temperatures, and water levels; track fuel pressure.
  • Maintain logs of environmental readings and system parameters.
  • Operate ice rink equipment including ammonia levels and brine temps.
  • Use computers, PLCs, meters, tools to operate equipment.
  • Utilize CMMS to receive, document, and complete work orders.
  • Report defects and wear to CMMS; assist in prioritizing issues.
  • Monitor building automation system alarms and respond appropriately.
  • Be available on campus for inspections and maintenance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION PURPOSE

Serves as a key player to the physical plant operation and controls the Central Heating Plant. Responsible for the overall operation of the Central Heating Plant to include plant operation duties, inspections and watch standing, and campus alarm monitoring.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform routine daily operations on all steam generating, auxiliary, and ice rink equipment as outlined in the CHP Preventive Maintenance Program.
  • Monitor and operate steam generation equipment and auxiliaries.
  • Monitor, analyze, and control manual and automated systems.
  • Stand boiler plant watch and perform firefighter duties as required and outlined below.
  • Monitor and record high and low pressure system steam outputs, boiler water temperature, pressure and water levels, as well as fuel pressure.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records of outside air temperature, feeding water temperature, boiler water levels, receiving water temperature, and steam pressures.
  • Monitor and operate ice rink equipment to include checking and recording ammonia levels, brine system temperatures.
  • Operate equipment—using computers, PLCs, meters, hand and power tools.
  • Utilize mobile devices and a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to receive, document, and complete work order requests.
  • Observing and reporting, through the CMMS, defects, deterioration and wear and tear on the facilities.
  • Monitor campus building automation system alarms; evaluate issues to determine priorities and appropriate response.
  • Be available for work on campus when needed for steam equipment inspections and or maintenance/upkeep.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Some college experience helpful.
  • Training in HVAC field is required.
  • Training in building automation systems is preferred.
  • License as Stationary Engineer preferred.
EXPERIENCE
  • Experience in steam plant operation or maintenance.
  • Experience with computer-based controls, building automation systems, steam and hydronic heating systems, and air conditioning equipment.
  • Experience operating commercial refrigeration equipment preferred.
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Experience in an institutional or campus setting preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Ability to work off ladders, aerial platforms, and lifts.
  2. Ability to lift and transport a minimum of 50 lbs. without assistance.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Successfully complete upon hire a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
  2. Essential personnel are required to report to or remain at work if instructed directly by designated personnel during emergency events or inclement weather.
