Job summary

The Chronicle Of Higher Education, Inc. is seeking an HVAC Controls Systems Technician to maintain, repair and install HVAC systems and BAS controls in our on-campus facilities. You will read and modify BAS logic, monitor systems, and implement energy-saving strategies while coordinating with the Mechanical Services Supervisor.

Requirements include a high school diploma, 5+ years of HVAC experience, and EPA universal certification (preferred). Associates degree and state licenses are a plus.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associates degree preferred, in HVAC technology or related field.
  • Universal EPA Certification for handling refrigerants preferred.
  • NH State Gas License preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in commercial/residential HVAC operations/maintenance and installation.

Responsibilities

  • Read, write and modify BAS Sequence of Operations code and use BAS digital logic controls to adjust equipment operation and schedules.
  • Perform daily system checks and operate multiple software applications for building control systems.
  • Monitor and control HVAC equipment and energy management programs.
  • Implement energy-saving practices and troubleshoot using BAS.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on HVAC systems and BAS network.
  • Inspect and test digital/electrical/electronic control equipment for HVAC and related systems.
  • Respond to urgent mechanical repairs on HVAC and plumbing.
  • Maintain safe work conditions and be on-call for emergencies.
  • Support Facilities Operations as needed.

Full-time, 40 hours/wk. On-Call 1 week every 7weeks. Schedule may vary according to departmental and Academyneeds.

WAGE RANGE

$44.00- $44.75 per hour. Wage is based onrelevant experience and education.

POSITION PURPOSE

Contributes to the mechanical services team which includes theheating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and plumbing shopoperations with an emphasis in HVAC by maintaining, repairing, andinstalling heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems andequipment, ensuring effective and efficient operations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Read, write and modify Building Automation Software (BAS)Sequence of Operations code and use the BAS digital logic controlsto make changes to equipment operation, building schedules,software programming, creating historical logs/trends in additionto make changes at the application and equipment level.
  • Perform daily system checks and operation of several softwareapplications for building control systems.
  • Monitor and control and maintain HVAC equipment.
  • Strategize/implement energy saving practices on campus inaddition to using BAS for troubleshooting, diagnosing andevaluating needed repairs of mechanical equipment.
  • Perform skilled preventative maintenance & repairs on HVACsystems and BAS control network.
  • Inspect, install, operate, repair, modify and test digital,electrical, mechanical, and electronic control equipment related toheating, air conditioning, fume hood, steam distribution andexhaust systems.
  • Respond to and address urgent mechanical system repair issueson both HVAC and plumbing equipment.
  • Maintain safe working conditions on the job and in theshop.
  • Required to be on-call in the event of an HVAC or plumbingemergency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including support toFacilities Operations.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associates degree preferred, preferably in HVAC Technology or arelated field.
  • Universal EPA Certification for handling all applicablerefrigerants preferred.
  • NH State Gas License preferred.
EXPERIENCE
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in commercial/residentialHVAC systems operations/maintenance and installation includingdirect experience with computer based/ DDC controls and energymanagement programs required.
  • Firm knowledge of and experience with building automationcontrols similar to those currently in use within the Academy ispreferred. (Schnieder Continuum/EcoStruxure; Siemens; TridiumNiagara)
  • A working knowledge of mechanical operations and hands on HVACmaintenance, including electrical, electronic and pneumatic controlequipment, steam and hydronic heating systems and air conditioningsystems preferred.
  • Proficiency with computer applications required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work andofficers must be able to remain on their feet for extended periodsof time, go up and down flights of steps, as well as stoop, kneel,crouch, and lift.
  2. Ability to lift and transport a minimum of 50lbs withoutassistance.
  3. Ability to withstand exposure to inclement weather (rain, snow,sleet, freezing temperatures, etc.).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Successfully complete upon hire a criminal background check(reviewed every 5 years).
  2. Clean Driving record upon hire (reviewed annually).

Will be required to wear personal protective equipment asappropriate for the work assignment.
