Job summary

The University of Central Missouri is seeking a skilled Boiler Technician to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair campus boiler, steam distribution, heating, and water treatment systems. This role supports academic, residential, athletic, and administrative facilities.

You will work with higher-level boiler technicians, perform preventive maintenance, monitor system performance, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance. Evening/weekend on-call may be required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training in boiler operations, HVAC, or related field preferred.
  • One year of industrial/mechanical plant experience required.
  • Prior boiler plant experience or utilities experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and repair campus boiler systems and equipment.

  • Assist with troubleshooting pneumatic, electronic, and solid-state control systems.

Job description

Description

This position performs skilled and semi-skilled work in theoperation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and preventivemaintenance of campus boiler, steam distribution, heating, andwater treatment systems, as well as associated mechanicalequipment. This position works alongside and takes direction fromhigher-level broiler technicians to maintain reliable utilityservices supporting the university's academic, residential,athletic, and administrative facilities.

Examples of Duties
Boiler and Heating System Operations (55%)
  • Operates, monitors, maintains, and assists in the repair ofcampus boiler systems and associated equipment.
  • Assists higher-level boiler technicians with the operation andmaintenance of steam, hot water, hydronic, and radiant heatingsystems.
  • Monitors boiler combustion, draft controls, feedwater systems,condensate return systems, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Performs boiler blowdowns, soot blowing, water columnmaintenance, and related operational procedures.
  • Assists with troubleshooting and repair of pneumatic, electronic,and solid-state control systems.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, heatexchangers, piping systems, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Prepares boilers and associated equipment for inspections andregulatory compliance testing.
  • Monitors system performance and recommends corrective actions to improve efficiency and reliability.
Water Treatment and Utility Systems (20%)
  • Operates and maintains open and closed-loop water systems.
  • Performs water testing and chemical analysis for boiler water, condensate systems, fountains, and related systems.
  • Safely mixes, handles, and applies water treatment chemicals inaccordance with university, state, and federal regulations.
  • Monitors potable water systems and maintains proper pressure anddisinfection levels.
  • Maintains accurate operational records, water quality logs, andchemical treatment documentation.
Mechanical Maintenance and Support (15%)
  • Performs minor pipefitting, equipment repairs, lubrication, andmechanical maintenance.
  • Assists with installation, replacement, and repair of pumps,motors, valves, piping, and support equipment.
  • Coordinates with maintenance personnel and contractors asrequired.
  • Supports campus maintenance activities and emergency responseoperations.
Safety, Training, and Compliance (10%)
  • Conducts routine safety inspections of boilers, mechanical rooms,and utility equipment.
  • Completes all required environmental, safety, and regulatorytraining, including departmental training programs and continuingeducation opportunities.
  • Follows lockout/tagout procedures and all applicable safetyregulations.
  • Maintains compliance with applicable boiler, pressure vessel,water treatment, and environmental regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
Education:
  • A high school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training, trade school, apprenticeship, militarytraining, or coursework in boiler operations, HVAC, mechanicalsystems, industrial maintenance, or related field preferred.

Education may be substituted for experience, or experience foreducation, based on the following: AA or 60 credit hours = 2 yearsof experience; BA/BS or 120 credit hours = 4 years of experience;MAIMS = 6 years of experience.

Experience:
  • One (1) year of industrial and/or mechanical plant experience,or equivalent experience where machine operation has beenemphasized, is required.
  • Prior boiler plant experience, mechanical maintenance,industrial plant operations, HVAC systems, and utilitiespreferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge: General knowledge of boiler operations, steamsystems, heating systems, and water treatment processes.

Skills: Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills,with mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform routinemaintenance and repairs involving pumps, motors, valves, and pipingsystems. Have the skills to operate boilers and associatedauxiliary equipment, water treatment and testing equipment,combustion analyzers and diagnostic instruments, and computerizedmaintenance management systems, hand tools, power tools, andspecialized trade equipment, and operate university-ownedvehicles.

Abilities: Ability to read gauges, meters, blueprints,schematics, and technical manuals. Ability to safely work aroundhigh-pressure steam, hot water systems, chemicals, and rotatingequipment. Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff,students, contractors, and coworkers. Ability to maintain accuraterecords and complete required documentation. Ability to follow andcarry out written and verbal instructions. Ability to follow safetyinstructions, understand operating procedures, and must be able tocommunicate effectively with staff and supervision.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • A valid U.S. driver's license is required
  • Ability to obtain job-related certifications as required.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, and other hazardousmaterials.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

May work at heights using ladders, scaffolding, or mechanicallifts.

Must have the ability to respond to emergencies and work eveningsand weekends to support critical campus needs.
