Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks an Equipment Operator to support road and bridge maintenance. You will operate roller, skid steer, dump and flatbed trucks, perform manual labor, and assist with traffic control in work zones.

The role requires a valid operator’s license and the goal to obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement; extended hours and emergency response may be required.

Qualifications

• Six months of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operates medium duty equipment such as roller, skid steer and combination tractor with side-mounted mower for road/bridge work.
• Operates a 5-yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling material and transporting equipment.
• Performs manual labor in construction, repair and preservation of state highways, roads and bridges.
• Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones.
• Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.
• Operates and maintains power tools and hand tools for highway and bridge maintenance.
• Removes litter, debris and dead animals from roadway/rights-of-way.
• Operates snow plow and spreader with brine/sand applications for snow/ice removal.
• Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Conducts pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspections in accordance with DOT rules and procedures.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
