Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to perform maintenance duties on roadways, install drainage, and support repairs in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities include operating tandem dump trucks and rollers, building basins, curbs, pipes, and repairing bridges, with traffic control duties and potential extended shifts during hazardous weather or emergencies. CDL must be obtained within six months of placement.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
• The physical demands involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling and grasping.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• May be required to work outside of normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Operates medium duty equipment such as a tandem dump truck hauling materials to and from job sites.
• Operates medium duty equipment such as a large roller > 4 tons.
• Performs manual labor in building catch basins, pouring concrete for curbs and raised median, laying pipes for driveways, and other drainage structures, repairing shoulders, clearing right-of-way and repairing bridges.
• Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic and to protect workers, the general public, and equipment.
• Removes litter and dead animals from the right-of-way.
• Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.
