Job summary

Driving Academy in Wayne is seeking a part-time CDL Instructor to deliver high-quality classroom and hands-on training for aspiring CDL holders. You will guide students through pre-trip inspections, parking maneuvers, and on-road driving, ensuring safety and compliance with CDL standards.

You will work at the training yard, prepare materials, assess performance, and help students gain the skills needed to pass the CDL road test.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A and a clean driving record are required.
• Two years of relevant experience.
• Fluency in multiple languages preferred; languages will be specified.
• A teaching or law enforcement background desirable.

Responsibilities

• Instruct students in the skills needed to operate CDL vehicles, such as tractor trailers and buses.
• Teach students how to park CDL vehicles using various methods including with/without trailers and different backing maneuvers.
• Ensure students are familiar with controls, gauges, and components of CDL vehicles.
• Teach students how to conduct pre-trip and in-cab inspections in preparation for CDL testing.
• Prepare materials for lessons, assignments, and tests; evaluate and grade student performance.
• Track and assign student time in vehicles.
• Collaborate with management to develop safety policies and procedures.
• Conduct routine inspections on vehicles and arrange maintenance as needed.
• Maintain paperwork for student/yard files and other records.
• Move vehicles between locations in the training yard.
• Provide instruction on safe CDL vehicle operation in city, highway, residential, and rural driving.
• Oversee students learning to operate on public roadways; explain steering, braking, and turning; cover defensive driving.
• Demonstrate handling of skids and emergencies.
• Teach traffic laws, speed limits, rights of way, and insurance regulations.
• Familiarize students with highway markings, signs, and signals.
• Introduce basic vehicle maintenance concepts.
• Administer tests related to curriculum materials.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
