Job summary

Casella Waste Systems, Inc. is offering a CDL Driver Apprentice program at our Rutland, VT Home Office. You will obtain a CDL Permit, complete federally required CDL instruction, and train to operate commercial vehicles under the guidance of a Driver Trainer.

The program covers training costs and onboarding in a culture-focused environment. The role integrates into Casella’s Career Pathways, with advancement opportunities, merit increases, and safety bonus incentives.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must be at least 18 years old and legally eligible to work in the United States.
• Must hold a state issued standard CDL Driver’s Class B permit with air brake endorsement or be able to obtain one within 6 months.
• Physical ability to handle objects more than 50 lbs and work in varying weather conditions.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, listening and problem-solving skills, and dedication to customer service.

Responsibilities

• Performs pre/post trip inspections of the vehicle per safety standards and regulations.
• Operates various truck types (rear load, front load, side load, roll off) safely on streets and sites.
• Communicates courteously with customers and provides timely service.
• Completes route paperwork and end-of-day documentation accurately.
• Handles route sheets, empties receptacles, and resets bins after service.
• Attends training sessions and notifies dispatch of issues or escalations.
• Assists with backing maneuvers and supports drivers to uphold safety and efficiency.
