Job summary

FedEx Freight is seeking a driver trainee to become proficient in operating tractor-trailer combinations. The role includes non-driving duties such as forklift operation and dock work, with emphasis on safety and accurate pre-trip inspections.

You will drive day and night on all road types, handle freight securely, follow DOT regulations, and coordinate with Dispatch for pickups, deliveries, and delays. A class A CDL or CLP is required, and FedEx Freight is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Qualifications

• Must possess a class A CDL or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification.
• Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.
• Must meet all DOT regulatory requirements under 391 FMC regulations.
• Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers requiring ~100 pounds lift several times a day.
• Ability to lift/carry hand freight up to 100 pounds several times a week.
• Ability to sit for extended periods, bend, twist, squat, climb in/out of truck.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete required training.
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member.

Responsibilities

• Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks.
• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment.
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer.
• Perform freight handling using motorized and manual equipment, including forklift and pallet jack.
• Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, and rope.
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Communicate with and follow Dispatch instructions regarding delays, arrivals, equipment problems, etc.
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service.
• Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs.
