South Dakota State University is seeking a skilled Carpenter – Senior Building Maintenance Worker to join our Facilities and Services team in Brookings, SD. This role focuses on carpentry and building maintenance across campus facilities.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of carpentry specialties including framing, sheetrock, flooring, trim, windows and roofing.
  • Ability to read construction drawings and interpret technical information.
  • Basic mathematics including geometry and fractions.

  • Install windows, doors, framing, siding, trim, flooring, roofing, ceilings and partitions.
  • Repair or replace stair treads, handrails, ceilings, sheetrock, siding and roofing.
  • Remodel spaces including demolition and interior wall construction.

South Dakota State University is seeking a skilled and highly motivated Carpenter – Senior Building Maintenance Worker to join our Facilities and Services team. This position is ideal for an individual who takes pride in quality craftsmanship, enjoys hands‑on work, and is committed to maintaining and improving the university’s facilities. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota.
Facilities and Services is the internal department overseeing the growth, maintenance, repair and changes of the facilities, infrastructure and grounds of campus and satellite locations. Campus Maintenance staff have technical expertise in all trades including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, mechanics, HVAC , repair work, relocation, and grounds. Services include the operation, maintenance, repair and remodeling of university buildings and grounds and the operation and repair of certain types of equipment.

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

Job Responsibilities: Installing windows, doors, framing, siding, trim, flooring, roofing, ceilings, partitions, and other building components. Replacing or repairing a variety of building elements including stair treads, handrails, ceilings, sheetrock, siding, and roofing. Remodeling spaces including demolition and construction of interior walls. Building and/or installing cabinets, shelves, frames, trim, and countertops. Reading and interpreting construction drawings and technical information.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Experience in a variety of carpenter specialties, including framing & sheetrock, flooring, trim, windows, doors, roofing (metal or shingles),
  • Math including geometry and fractions.

Skill & Ability to

  • Perform basic and customized carpentry work.
  • Read and understand construction drawings, as well as technical product information.
  • Work safely with various types of power and hand tools
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Collaborate as a contributing member in a team environment
  • Willingness to learn new things
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Work outside in extreme weather conditions
  • Work from heights (ladders, scaffolding, lift equipment).
