Job Summary: Bucknell University is currently accepting applications for a Carpenter I or II - Flooring Installer. As a member of the essential services team, the successful candidate will be the primary installer for a variety of flooring replacement projects in addition to performing general carpentry duties to maintain, repair, and renovate University buildings and facilities.

Reports to the Carpenter Supervisor


Work Setting/Schedule:

On-campus


Monday - Friday, 6:00am - 2:30pm; Some evening and weekend work may be required, including overtime, in support of University's operations and special events.


Essential services staff are required to report to work during times of campus closure or emergencies


What You Will Do:

As a Carpenter I or II - Flooring Installer, you will do the following:



  • Flooring Installation: Completes a variety of flooring installation including carpet, carpet tile, VCT, luxury vinyl tile, ceramic tile, sheet goods, stair treads and vinyl base. Prepares subfloors, measures and cuts materials, and secures new flooring using adhesives or fasteners.

  • Building Maintenance and Repairs: Performs rough and finish carpentry work to repair and maintain university buildings. This includes repairing walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, stairs, signage, and structural components. Responds to work orders for general building maintenance and repairs.

  • Cabinetry & Millwork: Constructs, installs, and repairs custom cabinetry, shelving, countertops, and millwork. Utilizes a variety of hand and power tools to cut, shape, and assemble wood and other materials.

  • Renovation & New Construction: Participates in minor renovation projects including framing, installing drywall, insulation, doors, windows, and trim. Reads and interprets blueprints and schematics to ensure compliance with project specifications. Estimate time, materials, and equipment needed for specific jobs. Maintain accurate records of work orders, time sheets, and materials used.

  • Safety & Compliance: Adheres to all university safety protocols and building codes. Maintains a clean and organized work area and ensures all tools and equipment are in good working order.

  • Project/Event Support & Coordination: Collaborates with other trades and facilities staff (e.g., plumbers, electricians, painters, grounds, etc.) to coordinate project timelines. Communicates effectively with supervisor and university staff to provide project updates and resolve issues. Provides support to university events and other support functions.

In addition to the above, Carpenter II will also:


  • Perform duties of lead flooring installer / carpenter on assigned projects as the person on-site responsible for customer satisfaction, protection, cleanliness, safety, carpentry labor, and communication.

  • Develop bill of materials and project schedules.

  • Make recommendations regarding construction means & methods, details, and materials.


What You Will Bring:

Required:


Carpenter I - Flooring Installer


  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Two years of experience as a flooring installer OR equivalent two-year technical training/certifications in flooring installation.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive university vehicles.


Carpenter II - Flooring Installer


  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Six years of experience as a flooring installer leading projects/installations, OR two-year vocational/technical degree or equivalent training as a flooring installer and four years of hands-on experience as a flooring installer leading projects/installations.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive university vehicles.


Preferred, But Not Required


  • Carpenter I or II - Flooring Installer

  • Lift Training/Certification

  • 10-Hour OSHA Certification

  • Demonstrated experience in carpentry / woodworking.

  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).


Additional Details:

A post-offer criminal background checks, motor vehicle driving record check, and drug screening will be conducted


Employee must furnish and maintain own small hand tools (e.g. hammer, tape measure, knife, screwdrivers, levels, etc.)


Must have ability to learn and use Microsoft Office and other computer programs such as email and calendars, work order tracking, events management, scheduling, estimating software and other programs utilized by the University.


Physical Requirements:

Lift and carry 75 pounds unassisted.


Must have sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this position.
