Job summary

MVSU International is seeking a skilled carpenter to perform rough and finish carpentry, install doors, cabinetry, framing, flooring, ceilings and trim, and to maintain and repair buildings and fixtures on campus.

The role requires reading sketches and diagrams, operating hand and power tools, adhering to safety rules, and supervising a team of carpenters when needed. Open to experienced workers in Mississippi.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic carpentry techniques, including reading sketches and diagrams.
  • Ability to operate and maintain planers, jointers, drill presses, power saws and sanders.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety rules and practices is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Specialized knowledge to analyze and solve complex problems.
  • Valid Mississippi driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Complete jobs within the stipulated time and budget.
  • Lead a team of carpenters and assign duties according to skills.
  • Train new carpenters and carpenter trainees.
  • Document progress and report to the project manager.
  • Build and install door/window frames; install locks and hardware.
  • Repair and maintain doors, floors, windows, partitions, ceilings, and exteriors/interiors.
  • Operate power and hand tools and perform general carpentry tasks.
  • Ensure safety and quality in all campus maintenance work.

Job description

Performs skilled carpentry work involving the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of buildings, structures, and fixtures. Responsible for rough and finish carpentry, including repairing and installing doors, locks, hardware, cabinetry, framing, flooring, ceilings, and trim. Performs general building maintenance and repairs, such as roof patching, drywall repair, and other facility‑related maintenance tasks. Ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable building codes, regulations, and organizational standards while supporting the overall upkeep and functionality of facilities. Perform general carpentry work to include building, installing, repairing and maintaining of structures, furniture, doors, windows, etc. as directed. Operate associated power and hand tools and equipment

  • Ensure that the reputation of the University is upheld in the market by producing high quality work
  • Train new carpenters and carpenter trainees
  • Keep track of the ongoing project and constantly evaluate the performance of employees
  • Interact with the customers of the University and show good customer service skills
  • Lead a team of carpenters and allot duties according to their skills
  • Document the progress of the work and report to the project manager Build and install door and window framings; install locks, door knobs and other hardware.

Repair and maintain doors, floors, windows, partitions, ceiling and building exteriors and interiors.

Build, repair and refinish wood furniture and fixtures to include cabinets, tables, shelving, bulletin boards, etc.

Maintain carpentry tools in working order.

Erect, maintain and dismantles walls and structures.

May include plumbing, electrical, heating, cooling, ventilation repairs.

Painting, wall cover repairs, etc.

Supervise other skilled , unskilled workers as required
Monthly/Weekly reading of Utility meters as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the techniques for basic carpentry trade skills to include ability to read sketches, prints and diagrams.
  • Operate and maintain various hand and power tools to include planers, jointers, drill presses, power saws and sanders.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety rules and practices is required.
  • Skill in both verbal and written communication.
  • Specialized knowledge to analyze and solve complex problems.
  • Valid MS motor vehicle operator’s license.

Minimum: Three (3) year recent experience of related experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved
