Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Cardiac Acute Care unit. The role supports RN‑directed patient care in a day-shift, part-time 0.4 FTE schedule with weekend coverage required.

Responsibilities include ADL assistance, hygiene, basic procedures, vital signs, specimen collection, and accurate documentation, while upholding infection control and patient confidentiality standards.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must meet one of the following: CENA certification, or enrolled in health science program with nursing fundamentals/clinical rotation, or equivalent healthcare experience.
• Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and patient confidentiality preferred.
• Current BLS/CPR provider required.
• Experience in acute or extended care facility preferred.
• Must complete unit-specific core competencies as defined in orientation.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and comfort, including beds, transfers, positioning, and ROM exercises.
• Assist with hygiene and personal care.
• Provide catheter care (excluding insertion/removal) and wound/ dressing care.
• Assist with postmortem care.
• Serve meals, pass trays, and monitor intake and nutrition.
• Assist with elimination and urine/drain management.
• Collect and label specimens and perform simple urine tests when needed.
• Take and record vital signs and weight; use scales as required.
• Operate and safeguard equipment (oxygen, suction, ice packs, tourniquets, restraints).
• Maintain infection control practices and universal precautions; manage linen and waste properly.
• Document care per RN direction and communicate observations via appropriate channels.
• Perform other duties to support department efficiency and patient care.
