Job summary

Stony Brook Medicine in Stony Brook, NY seeks an Oncology Data Specialist to accurately abstract, record and report cancer patient information for the hospital's cancer registry. You will interface with management to support excellence in patient care, education, research and planning.

The role requires an Associate’s degree with ODS-C certification, at least 1 year in healthcare, and knowledge of NYS/national cancer coding, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree required with Oncology Data Specialist Certification (ODS-C).
• Verification of degree and certification is required for consideration.
• At least 1 year of hospital/healthcare setting experience.
• Knowledge of New York State and national cancer coding standards.
• Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and advanced medical terminology.
• Excellent computer data entry and writing skills with ability to process high-volume workload.

Responsibilities

• Support Cancer Program accreditation by completing documentation and coding per NYS DOH requirements.
• Case finding across internal and external sources of cancer-related encounters and reports.
• Abstracting: recording and coding data in a consistent manner.
• Quality Review: address abstracting errors promptly to maintain data accuracy.
