Job summary

Bowdoin College is seeking a Security Officer to support the Campus Communications Center and patrol the campus on foot, bicycle, or in a security vehicle. You will maintain a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni, visitors, and property, with responsibilities including patrols, incident investigations, and records management.

The role offers entry-level opportunities with a structured 40-hour week, a 7:00 AM–3:00 PM schedule (Friday–Monday), and a comprehensive training program

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required; Associate’s degree in criminal justice or related field is preferred.
• Current CPR and First Aid Certification (or willing to obtain upon employment).
• A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy are required.
• Attendance at a Campus Security Officer Academy.
• Working knowledge of various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems.
• Ability to work three regularly scheduled, 120 hours (18 months full-time equivalent) as Bowdoin College Security Officer I (of which 1,040 hours as a Museum Security Officer may be applied toward this requirement).
• Demonstrated proficiency in Patrol and Communications Center operations (minimum 96 hrs annually in each discipline).
• Ability to design, implement and maintain a self-initiated community service project that benefits Bowdoin safety.
• Ability to complete the Maine Campus Security Online Training Center courses.

Responsibilities

• Conduct daily patrols and walkthroughs of campus buildings and grounds, including locking/unlocking and inspecting alarms.
• Monitor the condition of campus facilities and report hazards to prevent damage or theft.
• Investigate incidents, crimes, and complaints and ensure compliance with policies.
• Operate the Campus Security Communications Center and coordinate responses with radio communications.
• Maintain detailed records of incidents, activities, and communications.
• Receive 5 weeks of initial training plus ongoing training throughout the year.
