Campus Safety Officer

Department: Plant and Facilities Operations

Location: Columbia, MO

Type: Staff, Full-time

Pay: $16.50 per hour (pay range may vary based on geographic location)

Job Summary: The Campus Safety Officer will assist in providing campus-wide public safety for college staff, students, and visitors in coordination with local law enforcement and emergency personnel. Duties include patrolling campus property while enforcing safety regulations. Responsibilities include assessing and identifying possible hazards (lighting, fire safety, mechanical areas) during patrols.

(This position is designated by the institution as a “Campus Security Authority” (CSA). As a CSA, you are required to report any information about crimes occurring on or near campus to the Director of Campus Safety).

Essential Functions:

  1. Perform duties in accordance with Columbia College’s vision, mission, and values, contributing to the Plant and Facilities Operations department.
  2. Practice excellent customer service.
  3. Follow departmental chain of command.
  4. Utilize emergency safety software and applications as appropriate.
  5. Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.
  6. Assist in ensuring compliance with the Clery Act and Title IX.
  7. Notify college administrators of critical incidents on and around campus.
  8. Show respect and civility in all communications.
  9. Attend work timely and regularly, working additional hours as necessary.
  10. Provide campus-wide public safety assistance in coordination with local law enforcement and emergency personnel.
  11. Patrol campus property, report suspicious or criminal activity, and enforce safety regulations.
  12. Assess hazards, monitor communications, and coordinate with other safety personnel.
  13. Complete paperwork related to work orders and safety notices.
  14. Assist visitors with directions and contact information as needed.
  15. Follow opening and closing procedures to secure doors and windows.
  16. Check email daily.
  17. Record crimes and fires in the Daily Crime / Fire Log.
  18. Provide safety escorts for faculty, staff, students, and guests upon request.
  19. Unlock rooms and offices as directed or per policy.
  20. Assess fire safety equipment for potential problems or malfunctions.
  21. Develop and maintain knowledge of all procedures and policies.
  22. Respond to emergencies, gather information, and submit incident reports.
  23. Address safety conditions, such as spills or snow removal.

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Reports to: Assistant Director of Campus Safety, Director of Campus Safety

Required Core Competencies and Experience:

  • Fluent in reading, writing, and understanding English.
  • Proficiency in active listening, speaking, writing, critical thinking, judgment, decision-making, monitoring, reading comprehension, time management, coordination, and personnel management.
  • Proficiency with computer software, including Microsoft Office and database systems.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two years related work experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Associate Degree or equivalent training.
  • One year supervisory experience.

Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's degree preferred.

Certifications: Ability to obtain or possess valid driver’s license, including Class E license.

Other Requirements: Background check, valid driver’s license, willingness to work shifts and at events.

Physical Requirements: Ability to sit, talk, hear, handle objects, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, type, and use a computer regularly. Accommodations available for disabilities.

Work Conditions: Rare exposure to outside weather; potential hazards when operating equipment.
