Job summary

Boston Public Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services seeks a Standby Cafeteria Manager to provide coverage for vacant or absent site managers across the district. This full‑time, deployable role offers experience across multiple schools and kitchens.

You will supervise staff, enforce food safety and sanitation, oversee meal preparation and inventory, and travel to assigned locations as needed with variable shift times.

Qualifications

• Requires high school diploma or GED and Food Safety Certification for Managers.
• Passing grade on Manager’s Proficiency Exam (administered by FNS).
• Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Suite (Excel/Sheets/Word/Docs/PowerPoint) and internet apps.

Responsibilities

• Provide supervision to cafeteria staff to maintain standards and practices.
• Train staff in food preparation, quality control, and sanitation.
• Oversee food preparation and service to ensure quality and appearance.
• Order food and supplies per menu and volume requirements.
• Verify deliveries and safeguard storage of food and supplies.
• Set daily/weekly schedules and delegate tasks as needed.
• Instruct staff in equipment use and care.
• Ensure health and safety per Massachusetts Sanitary Code.
• Maintain records of sales, purchases, inventory and personnel.
• Record cash receipts and prepare deposits and income reports.
• Collaborate with administration and field coordinators on safety and policies.
