Job summary

The Middlebury Institute’s Center for Advising and Career Services (CACS) seeks a student employee to support programming and services that advance students' professional development, career readiness, and employment outcomes.

This position is compensated at the Level A rate on the MIIS student wage scale: $16.95 per hour. Responsibilities include customer service, assisting advisers, updating Handshake, newsletters, events, and general data entry.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver excellent customer service for Middlebury Institute community.
  • Respond to inquiries via phone and email; direct to appropriate advisor.
  • Support advisors on projects related to student success.
  • Update Handshake: post jobs, publish events, resources, announcements, troubleshoot login.
  • Collaborate on newsletters and plan events.
  • Promote CACS events: flyers, digital signs, reservations.
  • Offer peer career advisor training.
  • Research alumni outcomes and career trends.
  • Provide general support including data entry and social media.
  • Document workflows and cross-train new graduate assistants.

Job description

This position, housed in the Center for Advising and Career Services (CACS), supports programming and services that advance the team's mission to enhance students' professional development, career readiness, and employment outcomes.

This position is compensated at the Level A rate on the MIIS student wage scale: $16.95 per hour.

Core Responsibilities

  • Deliver excellent customer service and create a welcoming environment for Middlebury Institute students, staff, faculty, and employer representatives.
  • Respond to inquiries via phone and email in a professional and efficient manner; convey general student information and refer students to appropriate advisor or contact.
  • Support CACS Associate Dean and advisors on a range of projects contributing to student success, including employer relations, career management classes.
  • Update Handshake: post jobs, publish events, resources, announcements, and troubleshoot login issues.
  • Partner with CACS advisors to write and compile student newsletters and plan events.
  • Promote and coordinate CACS events, including flyer creation, digital signs, newsletters, room reservations, etc.
  • Interest in training to serve as a peer career advisor, to provide general guidance on resume writing, interviewing, and other foundational career management skills.
  • Research alumni employment outcomes and career trends.
  • Provide general support including data entry, database management, social media, etc.
  • Document workflow and help cross-train new graduate assistants.

Position Prerequisites

  • Well-organized and capable of managing multiple projects.
  • Willingness to provide and maintain a high quality of customer service to students, staff, and faculty.
  • Strong communication skills – editing, writing and event promotions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Experience coordinating and liaising among diverse groups.
  • Comfort with technology:proficient knowledge of Microsoft and Google.
  • Team oriented and positive attitude.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

  • Position requires light to moderate physical effort
  • Periodic handling of lightweight parcels or supplies
  • Ability to work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time
Student Employment Eligibility

Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.

Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.

Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component.

Students are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.

Hour Limitations

All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
