About the Community Organization:

The Maria Sanchez House provides safe, affordable, and welcoming housing that empowers older adults to live independently, maintain their dignity, and enjoy a high quality of life within a supportive community.

Program Description:

Students will work with senior adults (ages 62 and up), facilitating and assisting with creative arts programming. Classes may include ceramics, painting, sculpture, jewelry making, and metalsmithing. Responsibilities may involve teaching art techniques, supporting participants in their creative projects, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment, and adapting instruction to accommodate varying skill levels and abilities.

Position Description:

The MassArt student will lead or assist with art activities for older adults. Responsibilities include preparing materials, providing instruction and support, and fostering an engaging and inclusive creative environment.

The position is flexible and can be tailored to the student’s artistic interests, skills, and availability, with opportunities to assist existing programs or develop their own workshops. Students may schedule their participation between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. based on program needs and availability.

Requirements:

Experience/Qualifications Include:

The ideal MassArt student will have an interest in arts education, community engagement, and working with older adults. Candidates should possess skills in one or more artistic disciplines, such as ceramics, painting, sculpture, jewelry making, metalsmithing, or mixed media. Strong communication, patience, creativity, and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Previous experience teaching, mentoring, volunteering, or facilitating group activities is helpful but not required. The student should be dependable, organized, adaptable, and enthusiastic about sharing their artistic knowledge with others. Spanish-speaking applicants are highly encouraged to apply though this is not a requirement.

Support / Supervision:

The Resident Service Coordinator will be present and available to assist during the scheduled days and times with seniors. Staff will remain available for support during programming hours as needed.

Tuesday - Thursday from 12:00 - 3:00 PM. MassArt students can work any hours during these times.

4-6hours/week (includes contact hours, planning, and set-up/clean up)

Wage:

$15 / hour

PLEASE NOTE:

This position is part of the PartnershipWORKS program offered through MassArt’s Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP). If you are hired for this position you will become a member of the team at your community site AND a member of the CACP student cohort. You will have two supervisors, one through your host site and a second through CACP.

The requirements for holding a PartnershipWORKS position through CACP are:

• Commit to your position for the entire academic year (fall + spring semesters)
• Participate in monthly PartnershipWORKS sessions throughout the year facilitated by CACP staff
• Complete time-sheets in a timely manner - every two weeks
• Provide photo documentation of your work at your host-site
• Thoughtful completion of all CACP evaluations
• Maintain communication with CACP staff regarding any challenges and/or successes related to your experience at your host site
