Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly, Boston (LBFE) is an international, non-profit, volunteer-based organization committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among older adults. We offer people of goodwill the opportunity to join us in friendship and celebration of life. Our vision is to create inclusive communities that span generations and cultures to prevent and relieve isolation and loneliness.

Program Description:

Our intergenerational social CitySites, Creative Connections, and Gen2GenQ programs are expanding to new senior housing buildings and senior centers in the Boston area. With this expansion, we are looking to have more students involved in our programs.

Gen2GenQ - In this program, College-age folx and older LGBTQIA+ people connect for conversation, social activities, support, storytelling and activism. This program is still in its pilot stages, and once we have more steady programs in the fall, we're hoping the MassArt student could lead weekly art classes ranging from painting, mixed media, dance, music, etc. Based on their interests as well as the older participants' interests.

CitySites - In this program, older and younger participants take part in various social programs like arts and crafts, painting, music, dance, board games, card games, storytelling and more - based on participant feedback. Our student leaders/interns are the ones who lead these activities and can be creative with a variety of programming. Many older participants speak various languages, so thinking creatively about how to engage multilingual and multicultural older participants in art is important.

Creative Connections - In this program, LBFE works to overcome barriers many older adults face when accessing arts training by bringing arts instruction to their residential community areas, free of charge. A student intern working in this program would lead weekly classes within the creative arts field (painting, drawing, creative writing, dancing, etc.) based on their skills and the older adults' interest. We will provide the materials and supplies needed to conduct the class, as well as the physical on site support from one of our staff.

Position Description:

This is an opportunity for creative, outgoing, and self‑motivated students to have a direct effect on the lives of older adults who are lonely and isolated and to help us shape our CitySites, Creative Connections, and Gen2GenQ Programs. Through in‑person programming we engage with residents, assess their social needs, and help plan, implement and facilitate a schedule of weekly art programming.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Building relationships with older adults in senior residential buildings or senior centers
• Curriculum development and managing art supply inventory
• Designing monthly recruitment flyers via Canva, as well as additional promotional materials as needed
• Managing administrative tasks for each assigned site, ie, attendance, participant surveys, and resident recruitment
• Taking photos and capturing content for social media campaigns
• Other administrative tasks as assigned

Travel Time: Students will be serving at T‑accessible buildings, so budgeting commuting time is very important. 10 minutes commute to 1 hour, depending on the location. Students will be placed at sites depending on their availability, language skills and LBFE's needs.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

• Candidates who speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Spanish, or Haitian Creole are encouraged to apply, but being bilingual isn't a requirement.
• We are looking for people genuinely interested in working with older adults and building connections in their communities.
• We're looking for students who are great with communication skills (verbal and writing), creative, outgoing, patient and flexible/adaptable.

Support / Supervision:

The student will have 30 min weekly supervision with our Senior Program Manager. The student will be expected to check in with their direct supervisor if there are any issues regarding service.

Work Schedule:

Programs will fall on weekdays only between the hours of 11am-5pm. Programs typically run for 1-2 hours, and can be reoccurring (i.e. every Monday at the same apartment building from 12-1:30pm).

All programs are in‑person at the senior housing buildings or senior centers. Students may need to come into the LBFE Office at 2 Park Plaza to get program supplies or work remotely at home to prepare for sites. This can be arranged with the student hired and their supervisor.

We are completely flexible with student class schedules, and will work around student availability as best as we can. Class times will be scheduled with the students to ensure this, rather than fixed before they are hired.

• 6-8 hours / week
• Paid hours include planning time, contact hours, set‑up, and clean‑up.

Wage:

$15 / hour

PLEASE NOTE:

This position is part of the PartnershipWORKS program offered through MassArt's Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP). If you are hired for this position, you will become a member of the team at your community site AND a member of the CACP student cohort. You will have two supervisors, one through your host site and a second through CACP.

The requirements for holding a PartnershipWORKS position through CACP are:

• Commit to your position for the entire academic year (fall + spring semesters)
• Participate in monthly PartnershipWORKS sessions throughout the year facilitated by CACP staff
• Complete time‑sheets in a timely manner ? every two weeks
• Provide photo documentation of your work at your host‑site
• Thoughtful completion of all CACP evaluations
• Maintain communication with CACP staff regarding any challenges and/or successes related to your experience at your host site
