About the Institution

Coppin State University, a fully accredited institution and a member of the University System of Maryland, is accepting applications for a Business Manager for the Division of Academic Affairs. Founded in 1900, the university is an urban, residential, historically black institution offering 32 undergraduate majors, 14 graduate majors, 15 certificate programs, and one doctoral program, serving nearly 3,000 students in day, evening, online, and weekend courses.

About the Division

The Division of Academic Affairs includes the Office of the Provost and four colleges – the College of Business, the College of Arts & Sciences and Education, the College of Health Professions, and the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences – as well as the Honors College, the College of Graduate Studies, the Office of Grants, Research and Sponsored Programs, Institutional Planning and Assessment, and the Parlett L. Moore Library.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the daily business operations of the Division of Academic Affairs, ensuring full compliance with university, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Manage all financially related business matters for the division, including accounting, budgeting, financial management, contracts, and hiring.
  • Coordinate human resources activities (FTE tracking) and personnel matters with the Office of Human Resources.
  • Create, maintain, and reconcile accounts using Workday.
  • Implement internal control policies and procedures to support cash/revenue collection and financial reporting.
  • Provide departmental account reports to the Provost and assist with preparation of the annual department budget.
  • Serve as liaison with the University Controller’s Office, maintaining open communication on current business and accounting issues.
  • Analyze expenditures and revenues, identify problem areas, and recommend changes.
  • Provide advice on adherence to budget and financial management procedures.
  • Evaluate office operations effectiveness and implement approved policies and procedures.
  • Identify, implement, and track cost‑saving opportunities focusing on operational improvement.
  • Coordinate annual internal audits and assist auditors with departmental records.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance, management, or a related discipline.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in a combination of budget management, grant administration, accounting, purchasing, and staff management.
  • Minimum one year of experience with Workday (preferred).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of general accounting principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of academic business processes, policies, and terminology.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, database, and spreadsheet software).
  • Analytical skills to review expenditures, prepare forecasts, and reconcile accounts.
  • Excellent organizational, multitasking, and prioritization skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Professionalism, discretion, and tolerance under pressure.
