Job summary

Muskingum University is seeking a Building Technician to manage complex facilities maintenance and oversee advanced systems including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. The role requires strong oversight of infrastructure and reliable on-call support on a 24/7 basis.

Responsibilities include daily housekeeping of facilities, safety reporting, and supervising student helpers. The position offers benefits and tuition remission for eligible employees.

Qualifications

  • Troubleshoot and maintain HVAC systems, controls, alarm systems, boilers, refrigeration, and electrical interfaces.
  • Conduct inspections and maintenance to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.
  • Retrofit and service new systems; diagnose and maintain building automation systems.
  • Oversee infrastructure maintenance including plumbing, electrical, steam, lighting and sound systems.

  • Dust mop, sweep, wet mop, and spray-buff floors.
  • Vacuum and clean rugs and carpets.
  • Scrub floors with machines.
  • Scrub and clean restrooms; keep stocked.
  • Maintain records and reports as directed by supervisor.
  • Notify of equipment or facilities needing repair.
  • Replace accessible light bulbs.
  • Collect and dispose of trash.
  • Lock/unlock buildings and doors as directed.
  • Communicate hazards observed to supervisor.
  • Maintain supply closet and inventory.
  • Supervise student helpers and assign tasks.
  • Shovel and remove snow.
  • Event set-ups and support for tents, stages, tables, chairs.
  • Strip and refinish floors.
  • Wash walls, vents and radiators.
  • Shampoo carpets.

Job description

Muskingum University invites applications for a Building Technician. This position handles more complex facilities maintenance, troubleshooting, and overseeing the operation of advanced systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and specialized equipment. This role requires a higher level of responsibility in infrastructure oversight.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Dust mop, sweep, wet mop, and spray-buff floors.
  • Vacuum and clean rugs and carpets.
  • Scrub floors with machines.
  • Scrub and clean restroom fixtures; keep restrooms supplied with towels, soap and other appropriate items.
  • Dust and clean walls, doors, windows, woodwork, and other above-floor surfaces.
  • Clean elevators, stairwells, and outside entrances.
  • Keep records and make reports as instructed by Custodial Team Leader.
  • Notify Custodial Team Leader of equipment and facilities needing repair or replacement.
  • Replace accessible light bulbs.
  • Collect and dispose of trash.
  • Lock and unlock buildings and doors as directed.
  • Communicate to Team Leader any potential safety or mechanical hazards observed.
  • Maintain supply closet and inventory.
  • Supervise student helpers as assigned. Assign tasks, monitor work, provide feedback and evaluate work.
  • Vacuum furniture and drapes.
  • Wash waste receptacles.
  • Shovel and remove snow.
  • Event set-ups as required, assist in moving tents, stage, tables, chairs, etc...
  • Strip and refinish floors.
  • Wash walls, vents and radiators.
  • Wash and vacuum light fixtures.
  • Shampoo carpets.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Troubleshoot and maintain HVAC systems, controls, alarm systems, boilers, refrigeration, and electrical interfaces.
  • Conduct inspections, troubleshooting, and necessary maintenance to ensure a safe and comfortable working environment.
  • Retrofit and service new systems, as well as diagnose, repair, and maintain building automation systems.
  • Assist with the oversight and maintenance of infrastructure, including plumbing, electrical, steam, hot water systems, lighting, and sound systems.
  • Evaluate the need for external contract services and oversee their usage.
  • Collaborate with others in the department for specialized repair and maintenance projects.
  • Comply with service standards, work instructions, and customer requirements.
  • Keep up to date on work order requests, maintain logs and records, and ensure proper closure of work order requests.
  • Maintain purchasing receipts and proper documentation for work order completion.
  • Ability to climb ladders, enter tight spaces, work in tunnels, and other mechanical spaces.
  • Must be able to respond 24/7 for trouble call backs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Advanced knowledge and competency in HVAC systems and controls.
  • Universal refrigerant recovery license and proficiency in handling refrigerants.
  • Working knowledge of telecommunication systems.
  • Ability to understand system interdependencies and how issues may impact other systems.
  • Proficient in using computers and relevant software for troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Ability to cross-train to learn to repair and maintain plumbing, electrical, and restaurant equipment.
