Master HVAC Technician

Position Summary: Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots HVACR systems in university facilities, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for students, faculty, and staff.

Responsibilities

• Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs building HVACR equipment consistent with manufacturer guidelines and accepted practices to optimize energy use.
• Installs HVACR units, including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
• Installs HVACR ductwork including flexible tubing and sheet metal construction.
• Troubleshoots and repairs HVACR units including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs computerized electronic, pneumatic, and direct digital control (DDC) devices related to HVACR control.
• Maintains and makes operating repairs on electrical equipment and appliances, oil and gas equipment, refrigerators, freezers, ice makers, and other refrigeration equipment.
• Operates and maintains a variety of equipment including hand tools, mobile electronic devices, measuring/diagnostic/testing meters and instruments.
• Conserves, installs, recycles, and reclaims refrigerants.
• Reads and interprets complex blueprints, sketches, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• Performs brazing, silver and lead soldering, pipefitting, welding, and fabrication as required.
• Performs various carpentry, masonry, painting, and plastering work as required.
• Coordinates repairs with other trades affected by HVAC operations.
• Assists in furniture and event set‑ups, breakdowns, and decorations for special functions and meetings.
• Performs other duties as assigned within the normal scope of departmental responsibilities and the individual's capabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and completion of formal HVACR training.
• EPA Universal/R410A license.
• Minimum of ten years of service in the trade.
• Personal hand tools required for the trade and ability to use a multimeter.
• Ability to research information from various sources to facilitate repairs of campus HVAC/R equipment.
• Ability to recover, recycle, and reclaim refrigerants following industry standards.
• Ability to enter refrigerant loss/charge amounts and manufacturer information into CMMS.
• Ability to perform preventative maintenance on all campus HVAC/R equipment using the current work order system.
• Ability to lubricate, repair, replace, and align mechanical drive components for HVAC/R equipment.
• Ability to lubricate, repair, replace, rebuild, and align pumps serving campus HVAC/R equipment.
• Ability to verify and diagnose proper operation of chilled/heating water hydronic generation equipment (centrifugal, screw, scroll, and reciprocating chillers, gas and oil‑fired boilers).
• Capable of troubleshooting equipment control panels locally and via building automation systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair central heating/cooling air distribution systems.
• Ability to verify hydronic water distribution system components and replace them as needed.
• Ability to verify steam pressure to campus heat exchangers where applicable.
• Ability to install, secure, repair, or replace air distribution components for optimal airflow and structural stability.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair electric heat sources (reheat, air handler, auxiliary, baseboard heating coils).
• Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, isolate, repair, or replace components of direct‑expansion refrigeration systems.
• Ability to implement pipe‑fitting techniques for repairs (threading, brazing, lead and silver soldering).
• Ability to verify, calibrate, troubleshoot, repair, or replace control system components from source through end devices.
• Proficient in direct digital control, pneumatic, electro‑pneumatic, electronic, electric, and electro‑mechanical controls.
• Follow verbal and written instructions in English and interact professionally with students, faculty, administration, and staff.
• Read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and operation sequences for HVAC/R equipment.
• Physical ability to climb ladders, bend, reach, crawl, and lift up to 60 lbs; work in enclosed spaces.
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record; maintain VU driving privileges per policy.
• Ability to erect and work on scaffolding per OSHA standards.
• Excellent safety record.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current OSHA 10 certification or higher and ability to operate aerial/scissor lift, bucket truck, and forklift.

Physical Requirements and Unusual Work Hours

• Climb ladders, bend, reach, crawl, and lift up to 60 lbs; work in enclosed spaces.
• Core hours are Monday–Friday 7:30 am–4:00 pm; earlier or later shifts may be required for emergency repairs.
