DESCRIPTION

Otterbein University is seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Technician to perform first-response and emergency maintenance on the university's mechanical, plumbing, electrical, telephone, and carpentry systems. The successful candidate will support the daily operation and maintenance of campus facilities through preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and emergency response activities. Applicants must be familiar with general electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC repairs and maintenance.

This is a full-time, non-exempt union position within Facilities Services. The position is assigned to second shift, working 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The role requires responding to emergency maintenance situations and may serve as a designated emergency employee for snow removal and other emergency events.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintenance & Repair
  • Perform routine and emergency repairs to heating equipment, electrical devices and lighting, locks, doors, windows, and elevators, including emergency elevator extractions.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance calls.
  • Quickly evaluate assigned or dispatched work and take appropriate action to remedy situations.
  • Complete repairs and return equipment to service while providing status updates to supervision.
  • Complete assigned work orders and report status to the supervisor.
Preventative Maintenance
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on building systems, including air handlers, heat exchangers, controls, domestic water supplies, kitchen equipment, and electrical supply and distribution systems.
  • Check the condition of serviced equipment and report repair or replacement needs to the supervisor.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance records, including lubrication schedules and filter changes.
  • Monitor inventory levels and ensure adequate stock of essential supplies and materials.
Operational Support
  • Assist other university employees as required to meet university priorities.
  • Serve as a designated emergency employee for snow removal and other emergency situations, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide limited supervision of unskilled labor and student workers.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience related to the duties of the position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Applicants with a college degree must possess at least two (2) years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Applicants must:

  • Possess basic knowledge of code requirements related to building maintenance.
  • Have basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
  • Be self-directing with the ability to supervise and direct others while also working independently.
  • Be willing and able to respond to emergency call-ins.
  • Possess a working knowledge of safety practices, precautions, and occupational hazards.
  • Have experience installing wood and metal studs, drywall, door frames, windows, cement forms, block laying, cement finishing, and hard-surface flooring.
  • Possess the ability to identify potential electrical hazards, take corrective action, and inform supervisors.
  • Be able to troubleshoot fire alarm systems and correct identified issues.
  • Demonstrate professional oral and written communication skills, including grammar.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must maintain Otterbein University's Certified Driver status.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires good physical health and strength to perform work and handle materials commonly associated with the trade.

  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work from ladders and scaffolds and in underground tunnels.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools common to the trade, including electrical testing equipment.
  • Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed throughout campus facilities and may involve exposure to a variety of maintenance environments while servicing building systems and responding to operational needs.
