The Building Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, operation, and repair of all facility equipment and building systems at our Woburn, MA site. This role ensures the facility remains operational, safe, compliant, and comfortable for employees and visitors. The Building Engineer will support facilities initiatives, emergency response activities, small project management efforts, and will play a key role in developing and maintaining a robust preventative maintenance (PM) program. This position reports directly to the Director of Real Estate Facilities and Construction.
This position is onsite full-time at our Woburn offices.
Key Responsibilities
• Operate, maintain, and repair mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire protection, and structural systems.
• Establish, implement, and maintain a comprehensive preventative maintenance (PM) program to proactively service and extend the life of all critical building systems and infrastructure.
• Track PM schedules and performance through a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), ensuring timely and documented execution of all routine tasks.
• Identify trends and recurring issues through PM data to improve system reliability and inform capital planning.
• Conduct regular facility inspections and provide status reports on equipment conditions, upcoming maintenance needs, and potential risks.
• Respond to facilities service requests and emergencies, including after-hours incidents.
• Ensure all PM tasks meet manufacturer recommendations and comply with regulatory requirements and internal standards.
• Monitor and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and building codes.
• Manage small facility improvement and construction projects—including office renovations, lab fit-outs, and equipment upgrades—from planning through execution.
• Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and other service providers to perform scheduled and corrective maintenance.
• Support the implementation of energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives.
• Act as a Health & Safety Liaison during emergency situations (e.g., severe weather, fire, security events).
• Provide facilities support for DoD secure infrastructure, ensuring classified areas meet operational requirements.
• Collaborate with other STR sites to standardize and optimize facility practices.
Required Skills and Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
• 5–7 years of experience in facilities operations, building maintenance, or engineering roles, with direct experience managing preventative maintenance programs.
• Strong knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, fire protection, structural).
• Familiarity with NFPA, NEC, ASHRAE standards, and state/local building codes.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, MS Project, and CMMS platforms.
• Ability to manage physical work requirements (lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing ladders, standing for extended periods).
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a team in a fast-paced environment.
• Technical aptitude to diagnose issues and determine appropriate repair paths, while primarily coordinating execution through vendor partners.
This position requires the ability to obtain a security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by U.S. Government.
Preferred Qualifications
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
• Security clearance (active or eligible).
• Experience managing facilities in a DoD secure environment.
• Project management experience.
Schedule:
• Standard schedule Monday–Friday, with on-call availability after hours and weekends as needed.
